All ecosystems, from aquatic to terrestrial, experience the consequences of increasing microplastic pollution, which unequivically affects biodiversity and human health. During the week of November 19 th, the international scientific community will share findings from their most recent research at the MICRO 2018 conference. The research behind the 460 conference presentations represents the work of more than 1500 researchers, a major collaborative advance in the current state of knowledge on microplastics. Their work contributes to identifing responsibilities and constructing solutions, forming a strong front against the serious global problem represented by the presence of microplastics in all corners of the world.
MICRO 2018 is under the patronage of UNESCO, and the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves and its Zero Plastic working group will also take part in the conference.
As island and coastal BR we are particularly affected by marine plastic pollution. The Secretariat of Menorca, in collaboration with Lanzarote BR, Marine Science for Society, are coordinating efforts to implement strategies against plastic pollution in island and coastal areas, and wish to build a common front joining our Network to the Micro initiative.
From November 19th to 23rd, Lanzarote will become the world capital of microplastics research. The Office of the Biosphere Reserve of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Marine Sciences For Society research network share with the participants and all those concerned the desire to construct solutions that bring us from knowledge to action.
