1st Meeting, Menorca, Spain, February 2012

The World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves hold its first meeting in Menorca from 13 to 15 February 2012 to discuss the common compelling issues regarding island and coastal biosphere reserves, to exchange their experiences and to establish long-term plans in response to the changes in biosphere reserve areas.

The Network decided to improve its role by developing the sustainable biodiversity conservation strategies and suitable utilization of biodiversity. Also, the network will endeavour to continue research and training programmes on biosphere reserve and other issues that are related to humankind such as adopting and alleviating climate change. These goals are concurrent with the objective of the 'Madrid Action Plan'.

A workshop meeting to start operating the international headquarters of Jeju and Menorca was held during he congress.
